Burnet baseball looks to bounce back against Salado

The Burnet High School baseball team lost to Salado 12-2 May 4 during the first game of the bi-district best-of-three series.

Game two will be played at 7 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Bulldog Diamonds. Game three, if necessary, will be played at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at Bulldog Diamonds.

The Eagles seized control of the contest in the first inning when they plated five runs then added another in the second. The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning. But Salado scored three in its half of the inning and another three in the fifth.

Salado’s Logan Flores had 3 RBIs off 2 hits, while Lane Heath and Owen Curtis each had 2 RBIs. Caden Strickland had 3 hits.

Pitcher Strickland was credited with the win. He struck out eight in five innings.

“We didn’t pitch well early, and you can’t waste pitching,” Burnet head coach Russell Houston said. “You can’t afford to waste a whole lot of guys. Their guy is on the mound who’s throwing well.”

Coaches must be methodical when it comes to pitchers for a three-game series, Houston noted. That means making decisions that gives his team the best opportunity to win the series in the next two games.

Therefore, the Bulldogs still have their starting pitchers for the next two games, which will be played at home.

And Strickland is the Eagles’ top pitcher.

“We knew it was going to be very difficult in whatever game he pitched,” Houston said. “Now it’s who can get the two-out hits and extend innings and all the things we’ve talked about.”
